Compare fuels for heaters: Which kerosene should you choose?

Fuel largely determines how your paraffin heater smells, how cleanly it burns, and how long the wick or burner lasts. All the fuels below are suitable for both wick heaters and laser heaters from all major brands (Zibro, Toyotomi, Qlima, and others). The difference lies in purity, odor, and sustainability.

Which fuel is right for you?

  • Good and reliable: Qlima Extra or Firelux Plus. These are the most popular fuels for everyday use at home.
  • As little odor as possible: Firelux Clear or Qlima Kristal Spark.
  • More sustainable heating: Qlima Kristal Spark (25% renewable) or Firelux Eco.
  • Shed, garage, or workshop: Forever Combu.

Why the right fuel matters

Paraffin heaters are designed for pure, water-free heater fuel. Contaminated, aged, or unsuitable fuel (such as diesel, heating oil, or lamp oil) causes the wick or burner to get dirty more quickly, makes the heater smell stronger, and can cause malfunctions (see error codes explained). In addition, the manufacturer’s warranty is void for damage caused by using the wrong fuel.

Storage and usage tips

  • Start each heating season with fresh fuel. Old fuel from last year may contain water and dirt.
  • Store the can closed in a cool, dark place, out of reach of children.
  • Refill the heater when it is switched off and cool, preferably outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
  • Use a siphon pump to prevent spills.
  • Do not mix different fuels in the tank. If you switch brands, let the tank burn empty first.

How much fuel do I need?

A 3 kW laser heater uses about 0.3 liters per hour at full power and less than 0.1 liters on the lowest setting. So, a 20-liter can will last roughly 60 to 200 hours, depending on the setting. Our page What does it cost to heat with a paraffin heater? shows the consumption per model.
